I had a similar problem once when I installed the lvs patch, mon and
heartbeat on a slackware linux box.
The prob was that the backup machine could easily take over the director
when it was switched off but fake did not shutdown when the main director
was restarted.
It's easy to check if this is your problem, simply search through the
running processes for an istance of the fake process that didn't
shutdown.

To solve the problem I had to modify some script so that fake was killed
at the right time to release the VIP. Sorry I can't tell you more
precisely where to look but at least you don't have to worry about the
serial communication.
