The default for 2.4.18 does not have ext3 as a supported type in
filesystems.  You have to select this when compiling your kernel.  I'm
pretty sure that 2.4.17 says ext3 is still experimental.  I'm not sure
about 2.4.18.  Select that and recompile your kernel...should work then.
