I think the proxy returning unreachable is just an indication of the fact that the server can't be found on the internal LAN.  Usually if the the host requested can't be found internally (ie on the LAN) the request is then sent onto the proxy on the assumption that it is external (ie on the Internet).  Of course it doesn't exist on the Internet so the proxy returns a host unreachable.

The real servers do have the VIP installed on lo:203

I hadn't thought of that, but some how I'll need to disable the DIP.  I guess I could stop nmbd.

Unfortunately it's MS Proxy

I think this is covered by Internet Explorer which has a setting to say don't use the proxy for local addresses, but eventually if the host isn't found locally it gets sent onto the proxy anyway.
