If you only have one ethernet then you need to use direct routing instead
of masquerading - or be very creative with suppressing redirects.
Your network should look something like this in that case.

The default gateway for the real server must be the Gateway and
_not_ the Linux Director.
The default gateway for the Linux Director
should also be the Gateway.
