Many thanks for responding. It was a qmail specific setting - in
tcpserver, I must use -l localname and -H options.

hmm, you've sent mail in html, which my mail client ignores when
it replies.
I expect you still have an identd problem. Watch the realserver with
tcpdump as you try to connect to see if it's calling the identd on the
client.
