I was under the impression that apache had the option to close down a tcpip session when it had sent all the hits in a request (or is this https?) as part of http persistence (this is not LVS persistence).
I has assumed that if the client didn't close the session in the timeout
then apache would do it anyhow.

I think you're talking about KeepAlive, which I have disabled on the real servers. It's too expensive to keep enabled for our site.
