Apologies for talking to myself here - googling did the trick as usual.
I tried disabling /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/eth0/accept_redirects, but
that did not have much effect.
Disabling /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/all/accept_redirects seems to have
worked. I'll be back in a while.
On the director? I presume you have more than one NIC on this machine.
If so, you've probably been bitten by the weak host model of Linux
(3.3.4.2 of RFC1122):
