I don't think it matters where you test it as long as you
are prepared to vouch for it working in a real setup. I
haven't used UML, and only one person has posted to the list
about using LVS with UML. UML is a hairy setup written by a
very bright person, but I personally wouldn't accept tests
run under UML as verifying that it will work on a real
multinode setup.

This is part of the problem. You have to understand the code
that's being patched, and run tests to show
o the functionality that wasn't changed is still working
o the functionality that has changed is working
o the new functionality is working
o what we know doesn't work
o what we didn't test.
just making this list up is an effort itself.
