the original use was to accept packets on the director. A 
trivial extension is to accept packets on the realserver. As 
of the 2.4 kernels REDIRECT does something different with 
the packet making it incompatible with forwarding on the 
director.

I had forgotten that the change still allows the realserver 
to work though.
