What can be the difference? In my setup moving vrrp to a physical eth
device solved the bind error.

Might be a bonding driver difference? What do you use?

Here is the relevant portion of my config:
root@wh-lb02:/etc/rc.d# egrep -v -e "^#" -e "^$" rc.bond.conf
HASH=layer3+4
MODE=balance-rr
MONPOLL=100
UPDELAYMULT=0
MAXBONDS=2

Drivers used is the e1000 one:

06:04.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82546GB Gigabit Ethernet
Controller (Copper) (rev 03)
06:04.1 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82546GB Gigabit Ethernet
Controller (Copper) (rev 03)
06:06.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82546GB Gigabit Ethernet
Controller (Copper) (rev 03)
06:06.1 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82546GB Gigabit Ethernet
Controller (Copper) (rev 03)
07:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 80003ES2LAN Gigabit Ethernet
Controller (Copper) (rev 01)
07:00.1 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 80003ES2LAN Gigabit Ethernet
Controller (Copper) (rev 01)
