This makes me think the code isn't in the kernel (or you haven't included
procfs support...).  A few random thoughts :
  - have you rebooted with the "right" kernel?
  - Did lilo pick up the changed kernel? (Bumping the extra version level
    option in the kernel config file is a useful means of catching that
    problem between rebuilds)
  - Did you do a full make clean/make dep type thing before doing the kernel
    build?
  - The default lilo.conf in Redhat 5.2 IIRC points directly at a kernel
    named vmlinuz.2.0.36-0.7 rather than just vmlinuz - this may be the
    source of your problems.
