I think the best is if you provide the kernel config file and the output of
dmesg
before making any more assumptions on you r config

uname -a says:

Linux 2.2.13 #10 SMP Wed Nov 10 21:37:01 CET 1999 i686 unknown

- So I believe I booted the right kernel.
- I also was really careful making make clean and make dep before
recompiling.
- I compiled with make bzImage or else my system was too big for lilo!

- I have had a look in my kernel options and it seems to me that there
also is the /proc filesystem support

- I also tried to compile the IPVS options either in the kernel or in
modules and the behavior is completely the same.
