I solved my own problem

Directory security was set to integrated windows authentication.

I am surprised that this setting would kill ldirectord...but it did.

I recently switched form Linux/Apache to Windows/IIS realservers (not my
idea!)

I am using LVS-NAT via the Ultramonkey package:
