are you running other software too, eg ldirectord, 
keepalived? Try turning them off as a test.

Someone else recently had a high load average (look in the 
archives). I think the problem went away with an upgrade
to the offending software.

Make sure you're using the standard kernel (not mandriva's, 
we don't know anything about their kernel)
