I think it is just a name resolution (WINS) issue.  Try the following
things..

#1 - disable netbios on production machines.  (no ifs ands or buts @
production)
#2 - create a hosts file with all the right IPs in them on your NT boxes.

ODBC setup? >
#3 - change the microsoft DB connect setup.. I think it uses netbios by
default in NT4, not sure about 2k.  In win2k go to administrative tools ->
ODBC data sources.  Under system tools you should see a SQL server option.
Click on that and configure the client to use TCP/IP instead of named pipes.
I don't remember the recipe for NT4 sorry it has been a while..note :
contact DBA first as usual :)
