Mysteriously, this has now started working.

I think I know what the problem was. I initially had a hostname as
the smtp_server. Keepalived wasn't happy about this and so
defaulted to using 127.0.0.1, then it cached this information over
subsequent reloads (perhaps?).

Couldn't recreate the problem. All seems to be working fine now.
Probably just a glitch in the matrix. Ho hum.
