The writable filesystem might be Coda, or GFS, or ReiserFS or others.

LVS handles the IP layer and doesn't care what OS is on the realserver.
NT works fine in the limited number of cases it has been tried.
If you are going to use LVS as a writeable fileserver, you will need
a mechanism to synchronise all the realservers
