Why? What would be wrong with that?
Okay, you couldn't do a very deep check, but if you did the chat over the SSL
connection (of course SSL handshaking must be handled out of line), all would
be fine. The SSH connection of course is a special case: Though a "simple"
script may check for the version number reply you receive upon connecting, and
check whether it receives binary "garbage" when it replies with the same
version number...

I wasn't actually commenting on the slowdown, just that a chatscript would
allow for checking all common services (SMTP, HTTP, NNTP, IMAP,...) from the
same code base.
