Sorry I misread your question. I assumed you wanted to do normal telnet from the Director (sitting at the Director) to one of the Real Servers.

The load balancer (or Director) should be able to get to port 80
on a Real Server as well, shouldn't they Joe? Isn't this how health checks (at least in Piranha) are performed?

no, the director is a modified router. There is nothing listening on port
80 on your director. All packets to port 80 are being forwarded.
