If you have multiple processors in the director, then 2.4.X has the
potential to use multiple processors for kernel tasks/threads which
should lead to better performance under heavy loads.

I would venture that right now, the 2.2.X kernel is likely more
stable simply because of the relative maturity.
Note these are educated guesses (hopefully pretty good ones) and
not derived from any quantifiable numbers or actual testing.
