I removed the VIP on the director so that I could use the Director as the
default gateway for the Real Servers.

The local routes play for transparent proxy, for example:

You don't need them. Your setup needs just existing
VIP on director:
ifconfig eth0:1 90.0.0.35 netmask 255.255.255.255
Something wrong with this approach? Why you removed the
VIP when switched to fwmark service?
