Actually, after chatting to some other people about this, 
it is quite a mystery indeed. Could you let me know what
version of Net::FTP you have?

Also, I've made a few minor updates to your patch in CVS, so you might want to
grab that. But I'd actually like to go back to something non-disk 
based if possible.
