arp'ing for the VIP.
How long does linux keep it's cache
about 90secs. presumably different for different kernels.
flush the arp cache on a machine with no traffic to the
other end and watch with tcpdump or arp -a to see when the
entry reappears.
and/or when does it decide to re-ARP?
every 90sec whether it needs to or not.
