I assume you've read about such setups in the HOWTO?
I shamefully admit that i haven't, but will do so right away.
Now i do a forced failover (stop heartbeat process) on the active node
active director? active realserver?
active director
and then things get 'weird' (at least, for me). Usually

is this connected to the failover problem?
I don't know. I was kind of hoping it was obvious to others if this is
related. I only have this problem when i do a failover, so in that case yes.
My question: is this a workable setup, or is it doomed to fail?
I don't know anything about rdp so can't say. Make sure you
understand the problems of realservers being clients in an
LVS.
I'll definately read up about it and post back with my findings.
