That's a conclusion I have reached myself, and I'm currently working to
remove Xen from the picture on the LVS node for the initial test (can't do
it for the actual implementation, employer won't stand for giving up half
the cluster to load-balancing).

Have not gone to packet tracing yet, but will if I'm still blocked after
removing Xen.

4 systems, all with Xen installed.  Currently I'm only running things in
dom0, in an attempt to keep things simple.  The actual deployment plan is
more complex (running both Windows and Linux services on the physical real
servers, and somehow (localnode feater or Xen) running some services on
the physical box with the LVS).

Hope this helps.  And as I said above, I'm currently changing the test
environment still more, trying to remove Xen from the primary LVS node. 
(I will succeed at removing Xen; if necessary I will reinstall from
scratch without Xen.)  Because, having encountered this level of trouble,
I agree that simplifying the test environment is a very good place to
start.
