Many thanks for the explanation Joe. 

One thing that I'm trying to figure out is how to incorporate some of our
FreeBSD boxes into the cluster I'm setting up - and your comments made
think of trying a few different ways of doing it. I still haven't got that
one licked, but I'm getting there :-)  (I looked in the archive and found
nothing there - however when I figure out how to get FreeBSD to play along
I'll post the details here so it ends up in the archive. :-)
