We use LVS mainly to Balance Web servers (but also mail-related stuff), distributing about 10-15Mbit incoming traffic (on 4 LB-pairs) with 60-80Mbit outgoing traffic. We found two limitations; since LVS has no access to content of (http-)packets all kind off session-based services without having a central session manager aren't LVS'able. Since LVS is too "low-level" this is easily understood. Much more complicated to explain to managers is why one may have only one service-http (one VIP) per machine (we have a lot webservers which perform better on two parallel running apache). Best bet here is to distribute those service over different machines (high availability). Last Escape I found therefor is 2 VIP distributed per DNS-RR on one Loadbalancer balancing to 2x5 Realservers (this service has 7 Mbit IN and 40 Mbit OUT). Of course this applies only to DR/Tunnel which we prefer in cause of better performance. Jens -- Jens Beyer jbe@xxxxxx |
