I'm still not certain what "gate" really means.  I always thought it had
something to do with how many hops away the destination realserver was...

Example configs show "gate" with no number, and I've always used 1 in my
setup(s).  Maybe changing this value to 1 or "gate" would do the trick.

Try taking out request/receive and restarting ldirectord.  Try running
"testpage" in request instead of "./testpage", which apache might view as an
illegal directory request.

If the above suggestions don't help I think you will need to tcpdump your
director & real servers and see what's really going on.
