I know that a persistence timeout of 10 sec is meaningless, but since I have
this strange behaviour, 10 on my machine seems to mean 10 minutes.

Your persistence timeout is 10sec. You may not
get the behaviour you want with timeout less than 2 mins.

Your problem about 100/sec minute, someone else will have to address that.
