There are similar sounding problems for people who abort their connection
to a cgi script on a webpage and the httpd machine load average goes through the
roof. Can you reproduce this problem yourself by just logging out or do you
have to ^D, or ^C or something like that?

If they are the result of aborted connections, what I do it just kill jobs that 
have
been running at high load average for too long. It's not very satisfactory, but
it's the best I can do.
