You should consider using a monitoring tool for that, as you'll
probably need some more monitoring (real nodes services) and
reporting (how many users are using each nodes and the whole
LVS cluster, for example) ?
Example tools: Nagios, Zabbix (great!), Monit, Mon, ...
Personnally, we use ZABBIX@work: Just the kind of "usefull piece
of code" you can't live without after discovering it! :)
