isn't lack of ports the real problem with this number of connections?

To have 8 million concurrent connections through a director to realservers
that only have 64k ports, you'd need 128 realservers?

for pb's original posting with 15mins persistence, then he'd need 32
realservers?

There's no point in increasing the persistence time (== amount of memory) if you
don't have enough realservers to use all the connections.
