At this stage Piranha and Ultra Monkey have quite similar feature sets, and
utilise the same underlying technology and in some instances the same code
- both projects use the Linux Virtual Server.  The main diferences being
that Piranha includes a GUI while Ultra Monkey has later revisions of the
Linux Virtual Server - that has fwmark support to simplify the
configuration of virtual services, and improvoved protection against DoS
attacks -  and comprehensive online documentation. I prefer Ultra Monkey,
but I would as I wrote it.

Yes, but not necessarily open source. You should take a look
at http://www.linux-ha.org/ and http://vergenet.net/linux/has/
for pointers and discussion of some of the alternatives.

You may want to look at some of the Ultra Monkey documentation,
http://ultramonkey.org/topologies/ and see if this is useful
to you.
