That's the way you should do it. Just imagine a Linux world where you had
to choose the distro depending on the software. If you get a vanilla kernel
and the patch, I assure you you're safe (with kgcc under redhat and some
others though ;)

I run my own distro and on some boxes Debian and SuSE. I hope someone with
recent RedHat version knowledge knows it.
