maybe my numbers:
i run proxy server (squid) for +3000 users, peak traffic RX+TX 50Mb/s, mostly 
1500 users at one time, the
machine is Athlon XP 1500MHz, 1GB RAM, caching 200MB only (yes, i have a
reason) and squid takes about 70-90% of procesor, load about 2.5, but it's fast
enough.
