We're biased here; if you say dump Piranha 99.99% of us nod :). Custom-made
solutions always fit needs more exactly. Sometimes driving a square peg
into a circular hole can be taxing.

Keepalived (http://www.keepalived.org) has a "call external script" option.
I can't remember what it was, but Ultramonkey (http://www.ultramonkey.org)
has one as well - maybe in the heartbeat portion. The venerable "Mon
solution" (http://www.linuxvirtualserver.org/HighAvailability.html) is also
an option.
