Basically you can deploy the lvs 'technology' for whatever you need to as long as it is tcp, udp or icmp (although gives sometimes a little bit a hard time). So yes, I'd say most of the subscribers here do use it to load balance HTTP, FTP or SMTP traffic. More, I'd say this is the best reason to use it.
