Yes. ldirectord re-reads its' config at regular intervals and can add
realservers (or edit their settings, or remove them) without affecting
the statistics - and connections - already in place between clients and
other realservers.

So - that aside - is your server lovejoy a better hardware specification
than flanders and krusty? I believe that this is the key to your
observations.
Additionally, the kernel running on your FC4 box is way newer than that
on the RH9 boxes (unless you've installed a custom one) and is likely to
give you a significant speed boost anyway, particularly with respect to
the way it handles in-memory object caching and other (tedious and
apparently unimportant!) things.
