Sun being different mainly.  Going this route saves them having to
register 802.3 MAC addresses with the global registry as the boxes
already have a unique ID anyway; the low four octets of MAC address
are set to this value.

It's only ever *not* useful (actively bad) when you attach multiple
ports to the same shared media (why do that anyway) or to the same
802.3 switch, where it produces some fascinating failure modes.
