presumably someone who understands netfilter is going to have to work
out how to get the packets to the right place so that it works.
Similar smartness is used to get the director to accept packets for
an IP which it doesn't have

I doubt if it's impossible. Just no-one has figured it out.
These may be the same at the moment for you, but I wouldn't
put it in the "impossible" bin.
