Hi Robert,
thank you for sharing your experiences/thoughts. I can´t resist commenting
on some stuff though ;)
It´s not of THAT great importance to us that the two nfs-servers are always
100.0% in sync, since we are running seperate mailservers anyways and losing
5mins of data in case of a failure of the NFS-Server is not really tragic to
us - many webhosting companies simply restore their daily backup after a
HD-failure overwriting all changes of the last 12hours or so :-(
I wonder if dual-homed-SCSI RAID solution will work fine with
Software-RAID - does anyone have practical experience with this ? Dual-Homes
SCSI sounds like a really interesting solution to me ...
Unfortunately I have to watch the bugdet so that we can still offer
competative prices and starting with a Hardware-RAID solution is definately
not an option.
Since I have to start with a little amount of machines I will try to put the
LDAP-server on the NFS boxes - maybe I will even have a LDAP-Server on every
webslave that will automagically sync itself with a "Mainserver" on the
NFS-Box once a day - this would take some load off the NFS-box.
The thing I am a bit afraid of is that I might set up a far-too-complex
system that will have a lot of "internal" problems and in the end not
provide better stability than the 08/15 "standlone" solution most webhosters
use... doing a cluster would mean that I will have to spend a LOT of time on
testing and I will have to do a lot of additional research on this subject
before I can make any decision. It is not the "easy way" of providing
webspace for customers...

I will keep you informed on my progress. I doubt that I can make some really
useful suggestions right now though since I just started digging into this
project 3 days ago - but since the projects is scheduled to be completed in
3-4months I will have plenty of time to spend doing more research ....
Greetings,
Jochen
p.s. Great story about the MCSE - I had a good laugh ;)
